FROM ALASKA TO TECH FOUNDER

I Didn't Start in Tech. I Started With a Life Full of Problems Worth Solving.

I grew up in rural Alaska, where you learned to notice what the land was telling you, make something useful from what you had, and find another way when the obvious path disappeared.

Long before I understood technology, I understood people. I understood resilience. And I understood that the best ideas often begin with one quiet question: Why isn't there a better way?

Karen Matthews, founder and venture builder

I Came to Tech Through Life.

None of these chapters looked like technology at the time. Every one of them was teaching me how to see.

ALASKA

I learned about the healing gifts held in nature, including white willow bark, from Indigenous elders who understood that the land speaks when you slow down enough to listen. Alaska gave me more than roots. It taught me to observe, adapt, and trust what others might overlook.

CURIOSITY

That curiosity followed me beyond Alaska, into unexpected adventures involving skunks, searching for gold, and a life that rarely moved in a straight line. I was never afraid to begin again or follow a question somewhere unfamiliar.

THE WORLD

I spent more than eight years working aboard cruise ships and traveled through 76 countries. I learned how people make decisions, what creates trust, and how to connect across cultures, expectations, and completely different ways of life.

STRENGTH

Sales taught me how to listen beneath the words. Business ownership taught me responsibility. Powerlifting taught me discipline, courage, and how to make a clear decision under pressure. I became a multiple World, American, and California record holder and an international powerlifting judge.

Everything I had lived was quietly preparing me to build what did not exist yet.

THE TURNING POINT

At 57, I Stopped Waiting to Be Invited Into Tech.

I did not have the traditional résumé. I did not come through a computer science program, and I was not interested in pretending that I had.

What I did have was decades of lived experience, an instinct for finding the real problem beneath the visible one, and the courage to begin before I had every answer.

I didn't come to tech through code. I came through life.

THE PROBLEMS THAT BECAME BUSINESSES

Every App Began With Someone I Cared About or a Problem I Had Lived Myself.

I do not sit in a room trying to invent random software. I notice where people are struggling, where good work is being held together by memory and scattered tools, and where technology could make life safer, clearer, or easier.

MEETPREP PRO

I knew the platform from both sides: as a record-setting lifter and as an international judge. I saw lifters managing meet dates, training cycles, attempts, records, and meet-day decisions across notebooks, spreadsheets, and memory. MeetPrep Pro began with a simple thought: the athlete should have one clear place to prepare for the platform.

BEACONLY

I love walking and hiking alone, especially in Oregon, but independence should not mean disappearing without a safety net. Beaconly grew from the question every solo hiker and every person waiting at home understands: If something happens, how will the people I love know where I am?

FLIPIQ

My daughter's work as a gymnastics coach showed me how much care happens behind the scenes. Skills, private lessons, parent messages, schedules, payments, and progress were spread across too many disconnected places. FlipIQ began as a calm command center for the work dedicated coaches already carry.

CREATORFLOW

As I began building one business after another, I became my own problem. Domains, costs, roadmaps, tools, credentials, ideas, and next steps were scattered everywhere. CreatorFlow was built because I needed one operating system for the companies I was creating.

TRAVEL — VOYAGEPORTAL & REVIEWCRITIC

After more than eight years working aboard cruise ships and traveling through 76 countries, I understood the guest journey from the inside. VoyagePortal grew from seeing important forms, itineraries, alerts, ship details, and destination information scattered across emails and paperwork. ReviewCritic came from knowing that the journey does not end when the guest steps off the ship. Their story, feedback, and memories still shape what happens next. Both businesses came from a world I know deeply.

ANAVIK HEALTH

My belief in healing began long before technology. Growing up in Alaska, I learned natural healing traditions from Alaska Native elders who understood the wisdom held in plants, food, and the body itself. I became passionate about helping people look beneath symptoms and support healing from within, instead of automatically beginning with another prescription. Anavik Health grew from that belief: the body has a story, and real healing begins when we learn how to listen.

SACRED BOUNDARIES

I was raised in a world where saying yes, pleasing everyone, and never disappointing anyone felt like the way you became liked and loved. Somewhere in that process, I gave pieces of myself away. At 57, I finally learned that I could say no without guilt, without a long explanation, and without becoming a bad person. Sacred Boundaries became a 30-day journey for kind hearts learning to protect their energy while remaining soft, loving, and whole.

SACRED WEALTH

The beliefs we carry about money often began long before we earned any of it. They travel through families as fear, scarcity, shame, silence, and rules we never consciously chose. Sacred Wealth became a 30-day journey for recognizing those inherited patterns and rewiring the generational beliefs that quietly shape what we feel safe receiving, keeping, and becoming.

ASK NONI

Noni was inspired by my mother, a woman with a generous heart who made gifts, knitted, canned, cooked, baked, and remembered the small things that made people feel loved. As Alzheimer's and dementia began locking those memories away, I imagined a personal shopper that helps families remember each other with the same warmth and care she always carried.

These businesses may look different on the surface. Underneath, they all begin in the same place: a real person, a real frustration, and the belief that there has to be a better way.

This is the work my life prepared me to share with the world.
